Spring is just around the corner and here in the UK that also means Mother’s day will soon be upon us! With that in mind I designed this easy mug cozy pattern that you can quickly whip up to use as a gift for your mum or gran or any other special person.
The free pattern is below or you can purchase an ad-free printable version in my Etsy shop here; my Ravelry store here; or direct from my shop here:
The Daffodil
I’ve decorated the mug cozy with a daffodil using the free pattern I designed as part of my Marie Curie (UK) Crochet Every Day Challenge. You can read all about it in this blog post. The daffodil pattern can easily be adapted to suit whatever yarn you have to hand but for this project I used DK yarn in cream and orange with a 3mm hook.
When you create your daffodil be sure to leave some long ends which you can use to attach the daff to the mug cozy.
Attaching the cozy to your mug
The majority of mug cozy patterns out there us a button fastening but they often have corners that gape or they’re really fiddly to attach and remove from the mug. I’m always forgetting to put my cozy on until after my mug is full of coffee. I found button fastenings really tricky to close when the mug was full, especially if the button hole is a bit tight.
I wanted my cozy have a quick and fuss free way to add it to your mug without having to tip your mug over to get it on.
This cozy is designed with a loop at each end that simply slips over the handle of the mug. The cozy will fit neatly and snugly around your mug in seconds.
Easy Mug Cozy Pattern
I’ve used yarn in spring colours for this project but you can use whatever colours you wish. I’ve used the Suzette Stitch to create the cozy as the texture created with this pattern is lovely on it’s own. Just in case you prefer not to add a daffodil.
The cozy will suit any occasion and would look stunning in red with a crochet snowflake attached to it instead of the daffodil.
Size
The cozy will fit a standard sized mug but can easily be adapted to suit different sized mugs, by increasing or decreasing the starting chain, it just needs to be an even number of chains.

Mug Cozy Pattern in UK Terms
The pattern is worked in rows from the bottom up. The CH1 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.
Abbriviations
SS = slip stitch
CH = chain
DC = double crochet
TR = treble crochet
SK = Skip the next stitch
To start CH40.
Row 1. For this round you will need to work in the back bumps on the back of the crocheted piece, the picture below shows my hook in one of the back bumps and a needle is placed two bumps along.
(DC, TR) in 2nd chain from the hook, SK1, *(DC, TR) in next stitch, SK1. Repeat from * another 17 times, DC in next stitch. Turn.
Row 2. CH1 (does not count as a stitch), (DC, TR) in the first stitch, SK1, *(DC, TR) in next stitch, SK1, repeat from * to last stitch, DC in last stitch. Turn.
Rows 3 to 11. Repeat Row 2.
R12. CH1 (does not count as a stitch), SS into each stitch across to the end. This forms a nice edge at the top of the cozy. CH20, SS to the beginning of Row 1, this forms one of the loops that will go around the handle.
Turn the cozy so you are now working across the bottom of Row 1. SS into each stitch across to the end. CH20 and SS to the first stitch of Row 12 to form the second loop. Finish off and weave in ends and you’re done.
Attaching the daffodil
I like to position the daffodil so that it is facing outwards when you drink from the mug. The easiest way to decide where to put the daffodil is wrap the cozy around a mug and pin the daffodil in place. Then remove the cozy from the mug and use the long tail ends from the daffodil to attach it to the cozy.
If you have forgotten to leave long threads don’t worry, simply use a length of matching yarn to attach it to the cozy, making sure that any knots are to the back of the cozy and that you weave in any ends.
Now all you have to do is attach your cozy to a mug, gift wrap it and give it to your favourite person!
