Get into the Halloween spirit with this cute pumpkin cup cozy crochet pattern! Whether you’re looking for something to decorate your coffee cup this season or a cute gift for a friend this is sure to fit the bill.
This pattern uses overlay mosaic crochet in the round to create the Jack O’ Lantern style face on the cup cozy.
While this pattern says it is suitable for intermediate crocheters, it uses basic stitches worked into the back loops or the front loops of the row below and so a confident beginner could create the cozy.
What is overlay mosaic crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is worked in the back loops only and in one direction with the right-side facing you; tying off the yarn after each row.
You would alternate between two colours with double (US – single) crochet stitches worked into the back loops and using treble (US – double) crochet stitches worked down into the front loops of the row below of the same colour to form the pattern.
You are working the treble crochet stitches over the top (in front) of the single crochet stitches hence ‘overlay’.
The chart and instructions on how to read the chart, including the special symbols, can be found below. However, the chart, and the full written instructions are included in the ad-free pdf version of the pattern which you can purchase using the links below:-

This design uses the overlay mosaic crochet technique worked in the rnd. The main fabric is made up of dc in BLO, and the pattern is created by working treble crochets into the unworked front loops 2 rows below.
Working in the back bump of the starting chain will give you a nice v-shape stitch edging to your finished piece.
Reading the chart
Read the chart from bottom to top, right to left (left to right if you are left-handed).
The first st of each rnd indicates the colour you will be using for the entire rnd. Note that on the chart, CC1 is shown on alternate rnds as a reminder but you will work a tr2d over this st on the MC rnds, covering up the CC1 st.
You do not change colours within each rnd (the colours on the chart are there only to give you an idea of how the piece will look when completed). Any square without a symbol on the chart represents a dc in BLO.
When working Mosaic crochet in the round, do not cut the yarn at the end of the round; the working yarn can be left on the inside of your work and pulled up with each colour change. Keep colour changes to WS.
