What you’ll need

You can make these mini granny squares with any weight of yarn and a suitable hook! How much yarn you need will depend upon the project you want to make and the number of colours you want to include.

  • I used Heatherly Worsted by WeCrochet* with a 5mm hook.
  • For the centre dots you’ll need approximately 2.5m of yarn
  • For the white border row you’ll need approximately 4m.

In addition to this you’ll need yarn for joining the squares together plus extra for any borders etc that you wish to add. So one skein in a single colour should be enough for several granny squares!

Abbreviations – UK Terms

CH: chain
SLST: slip stitch
ST: stitch
STS: stitches
TR: treble crochet (US = double crochet)

The Mini Granny Square Pattern – UK Terms

Round 1:  make a magic ring, 3 ch (counts as first 1 tr), 11 tr into the magic ring, join with a slst to the 3rd ch of the first 3-ch. 12 sts

Round 2: Using MC1, join yarn to any st, 3 ch (counts as first 1 tr), [1 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr] into the same st to create a corner, (2 tr, [2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr] into the next st) repeat three times, 2 tr, join with a slst to the 3rd ch in the beginning 3-ch. 31sts, 4 2-ch spaces

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

You can use any method to join granny squares but the double crochet (US = single crochet) flat join is a favourite of mine. You can find a tutorial here!
