I’m so excited to share part 6 of The Great Summer Mosaic blanket crochet-a-long with you! There’s something about summer that calls for bright colours, fresh flavours, and a slower, more relaxed pace – and that’s exactly what inspired my mosaic crochet section for this beautiful collaborative blanket.

When I started dreaming up my design, my mind instantly drifted to those blissful holiday moments: sitting by the pool with my crochet, the sun warming your skin, and a refreshing drink close at hand. For me, nothing says summer quite like citrus. Think zesty orange slices, sparkling lemonade and those fruity cocktails (or mocktails!) that taste even better when you’re in holiday mode!

I’ve always loved how citrus fruits bring a burst of freshness – not just in flavour, but in colour too. The vibrant oranges, sunny yellows, and hints of lime feel so bright, cheerful and full of life. Even the scent of citrus reminds me of sunshine and warms days, making it the perfect inspiration for a summer-themed design.

So for my section of The Great Summer Mosaic Blanket, I couldn’t resist creating a bold, zesty citrus slice motif – something that captures that refreshing, feel-good summer vibe and brings a little slice of sunshine into your crochet.

Introducing the Zesty Citrus Slice Mosaic Crochet Pattern

I first tried overlay mosaic crochet a few years ago and fell in love with it! It is truly a very simple technique that uses just two basic crochet stitches. Once you’ve mastered those you can start to create all sorts of lovely patterns! Mosaic crochet requires two contrasting colours to create eye-catching designs. But the best bit is, you NEVER have to change colours mid-round!

For this pattern you’ll need your favourite double knit (#3) yarn; a 4 mm (G-6) hook for the main blanket and a 5 mm (H) hook for the border. You can use any colours you wish, or if you want to use the exact same yarn and colours as the finished blanket below, then the special kit by Crochet.com might be for you.

Click here to buy the full pattern. Instant access. no adverts. printable.

Although this pattern is designed to be part of a blanket, there are lots of other ways you could use it to make items for you and your home. You could create a single square motif to use as coasters, or create placemats by repeating the same design just three times and repeat a second strip.

Or you could turn it into a fun bath mat! Instead of using DK swap it for Worsted/Aran/#4 weight cotton yarn (like Crochet.com’s Dishie Yarn), work 5 motifs and 3 row repeats for a sunny addition to your bathroom. Turn those ends into tassles for each of these ideas so you don’t have to weave in any ends.

Let your imagination run wild, there are many different options out there.

Pattern Notes

  • All rows are worked on the right side of the project.
  • Read the chart from the bottom up. Right-handed crocheters should read the chart from right to left; left-handed crocheters should read the chart from left to right.
  • Numbers running along the bottom and top of the chart are the stitch count.  Numbers running up the sides are the row count.
  • Each row is worked in a single colour. The first and last squares of each row will indicate which colour to use in that row.
  • Fasten off at the end of each row.
  • Every row begins with a beginning border stitch & ends with an ending border stitch.
  • Each pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
  • You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. The main pattern uses 4 repeats. So the foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches.
  • The pattern includes a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each.
  • The colours on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
