I’m so excited to share part 6 of the Christmas in July Afghan crochet-a-long with you! Each year I hope for the snowy Christmases of my youth. I love the idea of cozying up on the sofa with a blanket and just the tree lights on, watching a gentle flurry of snow outside the window. So a snowflake pattern is a nod towards my Christmas wish.

If you’re not familiar with overlay mosaic crochet then you’re in for a real treat! This crochet a-long (CAL) project is perfect to learn with, especially as there are lots of different patterned strips to try. The CAL host, Erin, from Juniper & Oakes, has a TON of resources to help you. But if you’re a seasoned mosaic crocheter then scroll on down to the chart.

Love the colours? Crochet.com have put together a special kit, with Swish DK yarn, just for this crochet a-long!

Swish DK is the superwash yarn of crocheter’s dreams! Made with high grade Merino wool, it is a machine washable yarn that is SUPER soft! Definitely worthy of being worn by a baby’s skin. The extra soft Merino wool is gentle enough for the most delicate of skin. While the convenience of machine washability makes it the ideal yarn for blankets that will be put through it’s paces.

The kit has two options, warm or cool, the image below shows the cool option. You can check out the kit by clicking here.

Introducing the Snowflake Mosaic Crochet Pattern

I first tried overlay mosaic crochet a couple of years ago and fell in love with it! It is truly a very simple technique that uses just two basic crochet stitches. Once you’ve mastered those you can start to create all sorts of lovely patterns! Mosaic crochet requires two contrasting colours to create eye-catching designs. But the best bit is, you NEVER have to change colours mid-round!

For this pattern you’ll need your favourite double knit (#3) yarn and a 5 mm (H) hook. Or if you want to use the exact same yarn and colours as the finished blanket below, then the special kit by Crochet.com might be for you.

buy the full pattern. Instant access. no adverts. printable.

Although this pattern is designed to be part of a blanket, there are lots of other ways you could use it to make items for you and your home. You could turn the strip into a long scarf, just add tassels to the ends.

Or you could turn it into a cowl? Instead of working the beginning and end border stitches, use an invisible join to turn it into a project worked in-the-round. Then add ribbing to the top and bottom. Although it’s not a tutorial you can use the same method for adding ribbing as instructed in my Arrowhead Neck Warmer pattern here.

Let your imagination run wild, there are many different options out there.

Pattern Notes

  • All rows are worked on the right side of the project.
  • Read the chart from the bottom up. Right-handed crocheters should read the chart from right to left; left-handed crocheters should read the chart from left to right.
  • Numbers running along the bottom and top of the chart are the stitch count.  Numbers running up the sides are the row count.
  • Each row is worked in a single colour. The first and last squares of each row will indicate which colour to use in that row.
  • Fasten off at the end of each row.
  • Every row begins with a beginning border stitch & ends with an ending border stitch.
  • Each pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
  • You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches. The main pattern uses 4 repeats. So the foundation row is (4×48) + 3 = 195 stitches.
  • The pattern includes a chart and written instructions below. You may want to refer to each.
  • The colours on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
