I’m so excited to share part 13 (unlucky for some) of the Halloween Mosaic Blanket crochet-a-long with you! There’s nothing spookier than a pair of glowing eyes peering at you from out of the dark! This Spooky Eyes pattern is sure to send excited chills running down your spine!
When I was a child I used to LOVE being scared silly by all things creepy! My favourites were Dr Who (I used to hide behind the sofa but wouldn’t let my parents turn the TV off!); a children’s book of horror stories that had a vampire with glowing eyes on the cover; and of course Scooby Doo and the gang. They always seemed to have someone watching them from the shadows! My design is a nod towards those glowing eyes in the shadows.

If you’re not familiar with overlay mosaic crochet then it’s MUCH easier than you think! This crochet a-long (CAL) project is perfect to get you started. The CAL host, Jamie, from Remington Lane Crochet, has gathered 14 crochet designers together to each design a section of the blanket. So there are lots of different patterned stripes to try and they all use basic crochet stitches. But if you’re a seasoned mosaic crocheter then scroll on down to the chart.

Introducing the Spooky Eyes Mosaic Crochet Pattern
I first tried overlay mosaic crochet a couple of years ago and fell in love with it! It is truly a very simple technique that uses just two basic crochet stitches. Once you’ve mastered those you can start to create all sorts of lovely patterns! Mosaic crochet requires two contrasting colours to create eye-catching designs. But the best bit is, you NEVER have to change colours mid-round!
Although this pattern is designed to be part of a blanket, there are lots of other ways you could use it to make items for you and your home. You could turn the strip into a long scarf, just add tassels to the ends.
Or you could turn it into a cowl? Instead of working the beginning and end border stitches, use an invisible join to turn it into a project worked in-the-round. Then add ribbing to the top and bottom. Although it’s not a tutorial you can use the same method for adding ribbing as instructed in my Arrowhead Neck Warmer pattern here.
Let your imagination run wild, there are many different options out there.
Pattern Notes
- All rows are worked on the right side of the project.
- Read the chart from the bottom up. Right-handed crocheters should read the chart from right to left; left-handed crocheters should read the chart from left to right.
- Numbers running along the bottom and top of the chart are the stitch count. Numbers running up the sides are the row count.
- Each row is worked in a single colour. The first and last squares of each row will indicate which colour to use in that row.
- Fasten off at the end of each row.
- Every row begins with a beginning border stitch & ends with an ending border stitch.
- Each pattern begins with 1 border stitch, has a repeat of stitches, 1 stitch to even out the pattern, and 1 border stitch at the end.
- You may choose to repeat the pattern as many times as you wish. Make sure your Foundation Row is made up of any multiple of 48 plus 3 extra stitches.
- The pattern includes a chart below.
- The colours on the chart indicate how the finished project will look.
Abbreviations & Special Stitches
UK terms
bs – Double crochet Border Stitch
BLO – Back Loop Only
ch – Chain
dc – Double Crochet
FLO – Front Loop Only
sl st – Slip Stitch
tr – Treble Crochet
Special Stitches
bs – double crochet Border Stitch – work a regular double crochet stitch as the first and last stitch of each row (designated on the pattern chart). When inserting your hook to make this stitch, I recommend inserting it between the two vertical bars of the stitch below rather than under the top loops. This can help make it easier to crochet into these stitches when you’re working the envelope border.
BLOdc – Back Loop Only Double Crochet: Insert hook in back loop of indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook.
FLOtr – Front Loop Only Treble Crochet: Yo, insert hook in front loop of st below the indicated st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and draw through two loops on hook, yo and draw through remaining two loops on hook.
