Your bullet journal key page is one of the few layouts that you only create once per journal. You will have to live with that key page for quite some time so you want to be happy with it.

My very first bullet journal key page was ok, but very plain. So when I needed to start a new journal for work I decided that I wanted to do something a bit different – this time I want a pretty key page.

Key page theme

Deciding on a theme for your key page can be quite daunting, you want to get it right so it can take aaages! (or is that just me?) This being a work journal I wanted the theme to be work related.

Now, like many workplaces, if it is your birthday you tend to bring in some cake for your colleagues. Where I work we’ve gone a step further and actually have a birthday list so we know whose birthday is coming up and therefore that we can expect cake some time around that date. With 60+ people in the buildings that’s alot of cake!!

In fact, during a staff survey a couple of years ago we were asked what was the best thing about working there and one of the top answers was “cake”.

Therefore my bullet journal key page just had to be all about cake!! And here it is…

Bullet journal key page decorated with drawings of cupcakes

As you can see, not only did I decorate the page with cupcakes but I decided that the lettering needed to get in on the act too and made gingerbread letters decorated with icing.

As this is a work journal I only used an inexpensive note book purchased from my local supermarket (this one came from Sainsbury’s) and includes a handy pocket at the back.  The black pen is  a Pilot V5 Hi-Techpoint 0.5mm*, however, as this is a cheap notebook, it ghosted through the page so I won’t be using that any more with this journal (this is still my go-to pen for my Nuuna journal).  I used Pilot FriXion eraseable pens* to colour in my cupcakes and gingerbread biscuits.  They are great, they are soft and don’t ghost at all even with the cheap paper!  For the biscuit ‘icing’ I used a Uniball Metallic Gel ink rollerball pen* (I bought a pack of 3 pens* that includes the white, gold and silver metallic pens).
