Country Garden Cowl mosaic crochet pattern - pale grey cowl with a blue flower, chicken and heart pattern

Welcome to week 2 of this FREE crochet along for the Country Garden Cowl Mosaic Crochet Pattern. I’ve broken the pattern into 4 parts which will be released over 4 weeks. Each part of the pattern will include both UK and US terms. It’s suitable for intermediate crocheters or confident beginners.

If you haven’t already done so, please visit the main page for this crochet along, it has all the details about how to join in; the pattern release schedule and the FAQs. But if you want to get straight into it you can always opt for the VIP, ad-free access by purchasing the pattern from my Etsy or Ravelry shops.

3.0 mm hook
Scissors
Stitch Markers (I also have a selection from Cats Whiskers Cro Store and Joy to the Wool Co.)
Tapestry Needle
Stylecraft Special 4-ply (100% Acrylic Yarn – 4ply / Super Fine / Fingering / Sock Yarn; 422m / 461 yards per 100g):

  • 1 skein of Silver (MC) (317 m / 347 yards);
  • 1 skein of Denim (CC1) (160 m / 175 yards)

I recommend any two contrasting solid colours. But you can swap one for a multi-coloured, variegated yarn.

Gauge

23.5 sts and 24.5 rows = 10cm/4in worked across the pattern.

Unblocked Sizing

Medium 30cm high x 61.5cm circumference.

Pattern Notes

General Notes

The pattern for the overlay mosaic body is multiple of 36 stitches. To increase the circumference of the cowl, increase the number of foundation stitches by 36.

How to Read The Pattern

When in the instructions you have a number followed by a stitch, eg 14 dc, this means you have to work 1dc into each of the next 14 sts.

Instructions in brackets (….) or square brackets […] are worked as many times as indicated.

Mosaic Crochet Pattern Notes

  • You can either follow the chart or written instructions.
  • Overlay mosaic crochet is created by working with two contrasting colours in alternating rows. Both rows are worked on the right side of the project.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, ALL double crochet stitches are worked into the back loops of the row while treble crochet stitches are worked into the front loops of stitches from 2 rows below. The treble crochet stitches are covering up the double crochet stitches from the previous row.
  • You can avoid weaving in all those ends by not cutting the yarn when you finish a round. Simply change colours after the invisible join, use the new colour to work the 1 ch, then continue with the round.
  • Leave the previous colour at the join and pick it back up as needed.
