Puff flowers are easier to create than they look! They look absolutely fabulous when worked up into a blanket but are versatile enough that you can use them to create almost anything!

In this tutorial, I will walk you through the step-by-step process of creating beautiful puff flowers that will add a touch of whimsy to your projects. From gathering materials to creating and joining your puff flowers, this beginner-friendly guide has everything you need to know to get started.

Gathering Materials and Tools

To begin creating your puff flower crochet masterpiece, you will first need to gather all the materials and tools necessary for this project. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • your preferred yarn in various colours (go for lighter colours and bigger yarn if you’re a beginner)
  • a crochet hook that corresponds to the yarn weight you choose (the yarn band should tell which size is most suitable)
  • a pair of scissors to cut the yarn
  • and a tapestry needle for weaving in loose ends.

These basic supplies will set you up for success as you dive into making these beautiful puff flowers. Now, let’s get started on creating the centre circle for your puff flower.

Creating the Centre Circle for Your Puff Flower

Abbreviations

ch: chain
dc: double crochet (US: single crochet)
mc: magic circle
slst: slip stitch
yo: yarn over

To create the base circle for your puff flower, start by making a magic circle with your chosen yarn colour. If you’re not keen on the magic circle then as an alternative you can chain 4, slip stitch to the first chain to join and then work around these stitches.

Round 1: 1 ch (this does not count as a stitch), 12 dc into the mc, slst to the top of the first dc to join.

Gently pull the working tail to pull the magic circle closed.

At this point, depending upon the item you are making, it is entirely up to you how tightly you close the magic circle. For example if you’re creating a wreath you may want to have a more open circle so that you can see through it.

This centre circle will serve as the foundation for your puff flower. If you’ve chosen to use a different colour for the petals, you’ll first want to weave in all the ends so that you’re ready to start creating the petals.

Making the Puff Stitch Petals

Now that you’re ready to create the puff stitch petals, first turn your work so that the back of the double crochet stitches are facing towards you.

If you’ve chosen to use a different colour yarn for the petals you’ll first need to join the new colour to any stitch then move onto creating your first petal.

Top tip: keep your tension loose for the petals to ensure that each loop can be pulled to the same height

Round 2

For this pattern the puff stitches are created across two stitches.

Step 1. 3 ch, *yo and insert your hook into the same stitch, yo and pull up a loop that is as tall as the first 3-chain (3 loops of your hook); repeat from * twice more in the same stitch (7 loops on your hook) and then three times into the next stitch, (you should now have 13 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all the loops on your hook, 1 ch to close the stitch**, 2 ch, slst to the same stitch you’ve just been working into to complete the petal; slst to the next stitch.

2 Ways to Join Your Puff Flowers

Congratulations you’ve created your first puff flower! But what now?

You could create a load more and then sew them together into a blanket (sounds like hard work to me!)…

OR

Read on to find out how to join your puff flowers on-the-go – not only can you see your blanket growing before your eyes – soooo satisfying! – there will be less ends to weave in which is ALWAYS a bonus!

I’ve included TWO ways to join your flowers depending upon how close together you want them. The basic joining steps are the same, it is simply the number of petals per flower that you join together.

Loose Join-as you-go

This type of join is best for items that can have large holes in them like blankets, shawls and scarves.

In order to join the flowers together to form a loose fabric you’ll want to joint one petal to one petal of each adjoining flower and there should only be two petals meeting at any join point.

Step 1. Create your first flower following the puff flower crochet pattern above.

Step 2. Create the centre circle of flower 2.

Step 3. Following the pattern above, work the first petal of flower 2 up to **, take your hook out of the loop, with the back of flower 1 facing you, insert your hook from back to front at the 1-ch closure at the tip of one of the petals, put the loop back on your hook and pull it through to the back of the flower 1 petal, then continue with the rest of the petal instructions.

Step 4. Following the pattern above, create the remaining 5 petals of flower 2.

Step 5. Follow the steps above to create flower 3, this time working the first join into the petal immediately before the join on flower 1; the second join will be to the petal immediately after the join on flower 2 and then create the remaining 4 petals.

Repeat these joins with each flower to gradually build your blanket or what ever you are creating.

Close Join-as-you-go

This type of join is better suited to bags, hats and scarves as well as blankets.

In order to join the flowers together to form a tight fabric you’ll want to joint two petals to two petals of the adjoining flowers and there should be three petals meeting at any join point.

Ok I get it, when I first heard that it totally blew my mind and I just couldn’t see how that worked so let me walk you through it:

Step 4. Repeat step 3 to create and join the second petal of flower 2.

Step 5. Following the pattern above, create the remaining 4 petals of flower 2.

Step 6. Follow the steps above to create flower 3, working the first join into the petal immediately before the join on flower 1; the second join will be into the 1-ch of the joined petal on flower 2; the third join will be to the petal immediately after the join on flower 2.

Repeat these joins with each flower to gradually build your blanket or what ever you are creating.

Tips for Customizing Your Puff Flower Projects

Now that you have two ways to join your puff flowers you can let your imagination run wild and start creating a whole host of items! But let’s also explore some tips for customizing your puff flower projects to make them even more personal and one-of-a-kind.

Different Yarn Fibres

One way to add a unique twist to your projects is by experimenting with different yarn textures. By using yarns with varying thicknesses or fibres, you can create a more dynamic and visually interesting piece. Try using a yarn for the petals that includes a touch of sparkle!

Mix & Match Colours

Additionally, don’t be afraid to play around with different colour combinations to achieve the look you desire. Mixing and matching your colours can bring a whole new dimension to your puff flower creations, allowing you to express your creativity in a variety of ways.

Try Different Yarn Weights

Another way to customize your puff flower projects is by varying the size of your flowers. By simply changing the weight of your yarn, you can create smaller or larger flowers, giving you the freedom to design pieces that suit your preferences. Imagine a row of puff flowers created using super chunky yarn as bunting in a child’s bedroom!

Top Tip: Don’t forget to change your hook size to match the weight of your yarn

By following these tips and experimenting with colours and yarn weights, you can unleash a whole new realm of possibilities.
